Analyze and evaluate the author's perspective in texts

ELA.5.R.3.2

What this benchmark tests

ELA.5.R.3.2 is a Florida B.E.S.T. benchmark covered on the Grade 5 FAST Progress Monitoring assessment. It sits in the Reading Across Genres strand and asks students to: analyze and evaluate the author's perspective in texts.

If your child’s FAST PM report flags this code as a weak area, it means at least one of the PM items targeting this benchmark was answered incorrectly. The school report tells you the code — it usually doesn’t tell you what to do about it. That’s the gap LeeLaa was built to close.

Why kids miss it

Cross-genre items ask the reader to compare or transfer between two texts: a poem and an article, two news accounts of the same event, a story and a related historical source. Students often anchor on one text and answer about it alone, missing the ‘how do they compare?’ pivot the FAST item is actually scoring.

What a FAST item on ELA.5.R.3.2 looks like

Two short texts on a shared topic, each from a different genre, followed by a question that asks the reader to compare, contrast, or synthesize the two.

The pattern that catches kids: the ‘obvious’ answer is plausible but wrong, and the correct answer requires citing a specific moment in the passage. Practice that pattern, not the topic in general, and the next PM score moves.

How LeeLaa teaches ELA.5.R.3.2

LeeLaa is a document-driven adaptive tutor: upload your child’s FAST PM report, and the system reads which benchmark codes were flagged weak. It then generates practice items in the exact FAST format for those specific codes — not generic ‘reading practice,’ but ELA.5.R.3.2-shaped items with FAST-style two-part questions, plausible distractors, and evidence-citation requirements.

Each item carries its own diagnosis prompt (what kind of error did the kid just make?) and its own teach prompt (a Socratic explanation matched to that error type). When the same kid hits a similar item next week, the system knows what worked and what didn’t.
